It is a rotary displacement valve, with a two-way, straight-pass body, with single-seat internals and a sealing element consisting of a circular disc or blade driven by an axial rotation shaft.

Butterfly valves have a large capacity because the cylinder bore diameter is normally the inside diameter of the pipe in which they are installed and the only obstruction is the disc.
It is limited by the fact that it requires considerable force to operate at high differential pressures.
When the valve is closed or fully open, the force of the fluid pressure is balanced in both sides and therefore there is no resultant twisting force to either side.
When the valve is partially open, a resulting force arises, which tends to always close the valve, regardless of the direction of the fluid.
